Originating in the early eighties in urban Jamaica, this music emerged out of a reaction to the prevalence of conscious reggae. Initially, it was defined by deejays toasting over reggae riddims, quickly progressing into a distinct combination of synthesized sounds, rhythmic beats, and often provocative lyrics. This genre underwent further developme
